Type 3: Typeface Analysis

Tyoe 3: Risographs

My speech design first started out with unconsidered type and abstract designs that did not do a very great job at conveying the entirety of the speech.   Then I made this new poster that I thought incorporated the anger of the speech, but ultimately made the design feel to clustered and not designed well. Then I started to actually view the patterns of her movements and used lines of type to convey sharp and fluid movements she makes across the stage. Then I took keywords and made them stand out in different phrases that really emulated the speech. Here is my final risograph print:

Type Critique: Kelsey Mack

Critique on Kelsey Mack's type project: Instantly the waves of type grabbed my attention. Some waves stay consistent throughout the piece, all forming the same waves through each line of type. Some of the words are changed to a different typeface, which some are very successful in pulling out information like the word Kremlin 's scale and bold typeface instantly draws my attention there. There are some issues with letter spacing, like the word "Kremlin" the r and e are very close together which i'm sure is because of the curve it sits on but kerning could have helped. Some of the shifted typefaces / scale of type overlaps other type, creating irregular spacing - i'm not sure if that is a right design decision because these hefty holes in the body feel erratic. Some work well though, the  "oh" covers up the text above nicely. Curvilinear lines aren't exact, for example the spiral on the bottom seems to have ridges in it, not a nice smooth curve ...

TYPE 3: Speech Analysis

The speech I chose was Ashley Judd's "Nasty Woman" at the Women's March, the video is here . Some things I picked up were: She emphasized a lot of key words Very aggressive with sharp movements and sharp articulate  Also emotional at times, can hear the sadness in her voice with provokes empathy Pauses often for effect, but never too long or too much Her voice fluctuates in volume to add depth within her speech  Drawn-out words to articulate and assert like CONflict, TRANSphobia, etc.  Seems frustrated like begging for people to hear her words, but also confirming what a lot of those people feel Moves her body a lot and has no problem speaking and articulating with her hands and arms Voice cracks a few times because of the force she is putting behind them Yelling almost, in a very "as a matter of fact" way1 Never interrupts herself - she does it once because she accidently said a brand name of something and then corrected herself and went on t...

Model of Communication

Rhetoric

PART ONE: research I first started out with this project with research and figuring out what rhetoric is. Definitions: the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques. language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect on its audience, but often regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content. The ends justify the means Nice Quotes: “Every manufactured item send out signals to the mind or emotions. These signals - strong or weak, wanted or unwanted, clear or hidden, create feelings.” - Dieter Rams “For Rhetoric, language is never simply a form of expression: it is a functional tool that is manipulated to achieve desired ends.” - Ellen Lupton “Misunderstanding associates rhetoric with the bombastic and hollow, with fraud and seduction, with deceit and sheer ornamentation. The long history of this art, in contrast to popular assumptions, tells us that rhetoric has been concerne...

MODES OF PERSUASION // 2

Modes of Persuasion in my own words Ethos: Persuasion based on the reputation of the author. Pathos: Persuasion through direct emotional appeal. Logos: Persuasion through facts, data, and logic. Homework for Pathos: "continue 'pathos' development. bring a few refined examples to pin up for class. " I worked with different means of pushing imagery. I wanted to work with some of the icons I made from the Semiotics work, as well as actual pre-existing images to compare and contrast factory farms.
