TYPE 3: Speech Analysis

The speech I chose was Ashley Judd's "Nasty Woman" at the
Women's March, the video is here.

Some things I picked up were:

  • She emphasized a lot of key words
  • Very aggressive with sharp movements and sharp articulate
  • Also emotional at times, can hear the sadness in her voice with provokes empathy
  • Pauses often for effect, but never too long or too much
  • Her voice fluctuates in volume to add depth within her speech
  • Drawn-out words to articulate and assert like CONflict, TRANSphobia, etc.
  • Seems frustrated like begging for people to hear her words, but also confirming what a lot of those people feel
  • Moves her body a lot and has no problem speaking and articulating with her hands and arms
  • Voice cracks a few times because of the force she is putting behind them
  • Yelling almost, in a very "as a matter of fact" way1
  • Never interrupts herself - she does it once because she accidently said a brand name of something and then corrected herself and went on to what she was talking about
  • She messed up only once, a little flustered after the brand name mix up but it wasn't quite noticeable (only when you've watched it a lot)

Rhetoric

PART ONE: research I first started out with this project with research and figuring out what rhetoric is. Definitions: the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques. language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect on its audience, but often regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content. The ends justify the means Nice Quotes: “Every manufactured item send out signals to the mind or emotions. These signals - strong or weak, wanted or unwanted, clear or hidden, create feelings.” - Dieter Rams “For Rhetoric, language is never simply a form of expression: it is a functional tool that is manipulated to achieve desired ends.” - Ellen Lupton “Misunderstanding associates rhetoric with the bombastic and hollow, with fraud and seduction, with deceit and sheer ornamentation. The long history of this art, in contrast to popular assumptions, tells us that rhetoric has been concerne...

Learning Summary #2

I started out wanting to make a miniature book based on microtypography. The more I learned about it, the more I realized that all the components that make microtypography are along the same lines of macro, or "normal" typography. I decided to move towards making an all around book on letter spacing and all of the different terms, or just a book about typographic terms. This is some of my research on Microtypography that I am going to incorporate into my new book. Microtypography is concerned with the more individual features of letterforms Macro-typography is all about how typography is arranged on a web page. Macro-typographical techniques can be achieved on CSS but we must also bear in mind that the Web itself is changing rapidly. Macro-typography is all about how paragraphs and groups of sentences are placed together and how they appear on a page. Microtypography has to do with the details; setting the right glyph, getting the appropriate kerning and tracking, and...

Eclipse

The whole Department of Graphic Design was in research session for Monday, August 21 for totality of the solar eclipse. All design students took part in observing a rare astronomical event which has been described as most spectacular and weird. For this assignment, we made work based on this event and our interpretation and experience of it. We gathered sound and image, wrote, diagramed, etc., while also slowing down and taking in the event.   At first I did not want to make an installation / experiential design of my experience, because it was already a happening everyone had already experienced. But thinking of a way around just showing the eclipse (something everyone already saw) I would take my individual and peculiar experience of being in the pool to the audience. I decided to gather more footage of sound and video of my pool at home. First I started to animate the water, but seeing user interaction - I decided to stick with footage of real water. I wanted to mak...
