Eclipse

  The whole Department of Graphic Design was in research session for Monday, August 21 for totality of the solar eclipse. All design students took part in observing a rare astronomical event which has been described as most spectacular and weird. For this assignment, we made work based on this event and our interpretation and experience of it. We gathered sound and image, wrote, diagramed, etc., while also slowing down and taking in the event.
  At first I did not want to make an installation / experiential design of my experience, because it was already a happening everyone had already experienced. But thinking of a way around just showing the eclipse (something everyone already saw) I would take my individual and peculiar experience of being in the pool to the audience. I decided to gather more footage of sound and video of my pool at home. First I started to animate the water, but seeing user interaction - I decided to stick with footage of real water. I wanted to make my experience individualized for one to two people at a time.
  So, I projected into a box that was in between two walls. It was a big enough space for at least one person to stand in front of the box and view the film I made. I also placed a speaker on the wall behind the box, essentially behind the viewer's head, to get an all around experience. I then placed chlorine powder inside the box and sprayed it with sunscreen. This way the individual will get sight, smell, and hearing. I wish I did find a way to incorporate taste and touch - but from other people's accounts, they were able to fill the absent sensories in for themselves based on their own contexts and experiences. One person said they could feel the water, from viewing the video, smelling the chlorine and sunscreen, and hearing the water all around them - it felt like they were actually in the pool.
  Overall I really enjoyed this assignment and people's reaction to it. Here is the full video I posted on youtube.

Type 3: Sculpture

I wanted to focus on the main "Form One" and "Form Two" part within the reading. I decided to take two spherical shapes and have one be smaller as the underdeveloped twin and fill it with black ink. Both spheres have smaller orbs inside them signifying lifeforms. In the underdeveloped one, the orbs are drowning in black ink. Around the pedestal that Form Two is sitting on, there is black wire coming out of the bottom and winding upward as if it is attacking / trying to infect Form One hanging above. Form One I decided to leave clear with bright orbs inside with a tiny red / pink flake that can be seen if you look closely. These are just some of the images I took that I wanted to add to the blog, I have a lot more but I didn't want this post to be super long.

Semiotics Learning Summary
