Project 2

This is from class Wednesday 9/14, where we started our new project: Monday Prototype. The assignment is to design a solution to Monday, through a smart object, mobile screen, and prototype. The project is supposed to take us through an interactive design process, from screen to object, considering temporal media and human experiences.

First we started with a mind map that we did individually, mapping out all of the different problems with Monday. I put some different color stars to some of the things that corresponded together.

After that we had to partner up and compare mind maps. Brooke is my partner on this project, and we both had some of the same ideas for what we wanted to focus on. One of our first ideas had to deal with coffee, but we mainly focused on anger after we talked through the options.
So, our idea was basically a "Shit List" where people could go through a series of questions that we thought could be humorous.
We liked that this could be used as an everyday outlet, versus just a monday thing. But for the sake of Mondays we also thought of incorporating Monday questions about the weekend, if you're hungover, did you stay up all night, etc, and it could give tips on how to overcome that. The Shit List would basically give you an outlet to talk shit about your day, or about specific people (no names) and then at the end of the day you could have many different options on how to destroy each of your shit lists, letting everyone have a way to let go of those things that happened to them throughout the day.

Brooke and I talked to Emmy about our idea but we seemed to not have a complete understanding about the assignment, so we had to come up with a new idea later. But we still did our mood boards.

Our mood boards had to be found images of technology, typography, color, textures, patterns, and visual inspiration that visualize and feel like our three words. Our three words were comfort, content, and calm, so all of our choices down the road will be based on these qualitative words, and the moodboards are one step to visualizing this. The mood board I created is on the right, and the mood board Brooke created should be posted on her blog soon.

Type 3: Sculpture

I wanted to focus on the main "Form One" and "Form Two" part within the reading. I decided to take two spherical shapes and have one be smaller as the underdeveloped twin and fill it with black ink. Both spheres have smaller orbs inside them signifying lifeforms. In the underdeveloped one, the orbs are drowning in black ink. Around the pedestal that Form Two is sitting on, there is black wire coming out of the bottom and winding upward as if it is attacking / trying to infect Form One hanging above. Form One I decided to leave clear with bright orbs inside with a tiny red / pink flake that can be seen if you look closely. These are just some of the images I took that I wanted to add to the blog, I have a lot more but I didn't want this post to be super long.

Semiotics Learning Summary

I chose Factory Farming as my social issue for our lesson in semiotics. Our first assignment was to collect statistics and figure out our representations. This is on another blog post but I will place it again below: Social Issue: Factory Farms Iconic Representation: Animals, cages, bars, overcrowding Statistics:  1. A typical supermarket chicken today contains more than twice the fat, and about a third less protein than 40 years ago 2. Hog, chicken and cattle waste has polluted 35,000 miles of rivers in 22 states and contaminated groundwater in 17 states. 3. Egg-laying hens are sometimes starved for up to 14 days, exposed to changing light patterns and given no water in order to shock their bodies into molting. It’s common for 5% to 10% of hens to die during the forced molting process. 4. According to one study, 65 percent of all hogs tested had pneumonia-like lesions on their lungs. Researchers believe this is due to ammonia and other gases released f...

Rhetoric

PART ONE: research I first started out with this project with research and figuring out what rhetoric is. Definitions: the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques. language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect on its audience, but often regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content. The ends justify the means Nice Quotes: “Every manufactured item send out signals to the mind or emotions. These signals - strong or weak, wanted or unwanted, clear or hidden, create feelings.” - Dieter Rams “For Rhetoric, language is never simply a form of expression: it is a functional tool that is manipulated to achieve desired ends.” - Ellen Lupton “Misunderstanding associates rhetoric with the bombastic and hollow, with fraud and seduction, with deceit and sheer ornamentation. The long history of this art, in contrast to popular assumptions, tells us that rhetoric has been concerne...
