Information Architecture - Website Research

TOY FIGHT Pros: - I was drawn to this page because it specifically related to the artists and who they were. They placed themselves first and who they were / what they were about before  you saw the work. I thought that was strong because it allows the viewer to feel like they know the two artists - not just seeing the work without really knowing who is behind it. - Very creative - instead of photographs of to represent the artists, they decided to make little characters of themselves in a doll like form. - The sight is very vibrant and has bright colors for each page - They only have a few projects (which could be seen as a con) but only has the best of the best of their projects up - Interactivity when you move mouse around - the image shifts slightly in response to the mouse Cons: - Because there is so much going on - if there is a slow internet connection the site can lag and does not look as great - Patches of space - when you scroll down the next page should appe

Search / Use / Assess

1. In class I worked with Brooke and Tori 2. We chose the website when2meet  because none of us have ever heard of this sight and it sounded intriguing. 3. First we were confused because none of us knew what this site was even about. So, as a user who happens to come across this site, there are no indications as to what it is about / what you are doing. Most of the type is the same size, not too much differentiation, my eyes go to the calendar first. "New Event Name" is the biggest element on the screen, which seems like it shouldn't be the first thing you read. The entire screen is cut almost in half by this black screen on the bottom that is for ads. Some of the ads are so bright and colorful I want to look at the ad more than the actual information on the screen.  Eventually on the very top - there is a bar with two tabs you can click. Eclipse

  The whole Department of Graphic Design was in research session for Monday, August 21 for totality of the solar eclipse. All design students took part in observing a rare astronomical event which has been described as most spectacular and weird. For this assignment, we made work based on this event and our interpretation and experience of it. We gathered sound and image, wrote, diagramed, etc., while also slowing down and taking in the event.   At first I did not want to make an installation / experiential design of my experience, because it was already a happening everyone had already experienced. But thinking of a way around just showing the eclipse (something everyone already saw) I would take my individual and peculiar experience of being in the pool to the audience. I decided to gather more footage of sound and video of my pool at home. First I started to animate the water, but seeing user interaction - I decided to stick with footage of real water. S.O.S Layout Assistance

The next project for Type 3 we had to design a product that people (student designers) could use to learn about a specific part of typography / typesetting. We were supposed to choose an aspect about type that we necessarily did not know ourselves / something we could have used when learning to typeset The Exegesis. After typesetting The Exegesis, I realized my biggest issue was margins and layout design. So, I teamed up with Brooke Cirone to develop a product that people can play with to help view text boxes in a manipulative and creative way. This helped me understand spatial value, and understanding that layouts don't just have to be boxes - they can be any shape you please. We also had to develop packaging, I wanted to create a box with a sticker to show the branding - but time and costs became a big issue. Exegesis

We had to typeset the Exegesis of Philip K. Dick and professionally print them through Blurb. For presentations we had to write a brief, one paragraph summary of our approach to the book and cover. This is what I wrote: The approach to this book reflects one of minimalistic properties. I chose one column to create a flow throughout each page and stay consistent throughout the book. Each verse is placed on the outer left of the column corresponding with the paragraph it is tied to, appearing like folder tabs (as folders is the main theme). This is reflected in the cover of the book as well, where the treatment of the prepositions are also placed on the left hand side and flipped sideways like the verses in the text. Each chapter page has a border with a chosen image that is blown up to achieve an eerie effect. Type 3: Sculpture

I wanted to focus on the main "Form One" and "Form Two" part within the reading. I decided to take two spherical shapes and have one be smaller as the underdeveloped twin and fill it with black ink. Both spheres have smaller orbs inside them signifying lifeforms. In the underdeveloped one, the orbs are drowning in black ink. Around the pedestal that Form Two is sitting on, there is black wire coming out of the bottom and winding upward as if it is attacking / trying to infect Form One hanging above. Form One I decided to leave clear with bright orbs inside with a tiny red / pink flake that can be seen if you look closely. These are just some of the images I took that I wanted to add to the blog, I have a lot more but I didn't want this post to be super long.
